Caelum in 30 seconds

The problem, S3 tiering, HA and migration — at a glance

What's different

Three things other NAS boxes don't do

Built for IT leaders who want predictable storage, no NetApp expert required, and no HA compromise.

❄️

Transparent S3 overflow

80% of your files are never read again. Caelum offloads them to MinIO, AWS, Wasabi, Ceph or Backblaze — and recalls them on open as if they were local.

♻️

HA cluster, no per-node licensing

HA orchestrator with quorum + fencing. 5–7s failover RTO validated in production. No per-node tax, no vendor-locked hardware.

🚚

Built-in assisted migration

SMB scanner + streaming incremental copy + cutover via DFS-N or DNS CNAME. Move off NetApp, Synology or Windows Server over a weekend, no third-party tool.

The product differentiator

Local and S3 — automatic

Caelum classifies your files by access age and archives the cold ones to S3 as local stubs. On open, transparent millisecond recall. Your users don't see the difference; your CFO sees the bill go down.

tier · local

Active files stay on the local pool

While they're read regularly, your files stay on the local pool — on disks you pick (NVMe, SSD, HDD or a mix). Full bandwidth, sub-millisecond latency.

policy · per share

Per-share policy, not one-size-fits-all

Each share gets its own rule: "atime > 90 days", "size > 100 MB", "extension in (mov, vmdk, iso)". Fine-grained, never global.

tier · cold S3

Offloaded to S3, stub stays local

The physical file lands in S3 (AWS, Wasabi, MinIO, …). An empty stub stays on the pool with the original path and ACLs intact. Cost: €0.005–0.023 / GB / month depending on backend.

recall · transparent

Millisecond recall on open

Caelum transparently intercepts the open(), pulls the file from S3 in parallel multi-part, restores it locally. 200–800 ms TTFB depending on backend. Unnoticeable on Office files.

How it works

Three steps, about 30 minutes of setup

1

Deploy the OVA

On VMware, Proxmox or KVM. Five-step web UI wizard. Up and running in about 5 minutes.

2

Migrate your data

Built-in SMB scanner + streaming incremental copy + DFS-N cutover. Nothing to buy on the side.

3

Turn on S3 tiering

Per-share policy (e.g. "inactive > 6 months → S3"). Save up to 70% on primary storage.
